Der
Monte San Giorgio im Südtessin-
vom Berg der Saurier zur Fossil-Lagerstätte internationaler Bedeutung Heinz Furrer Zusammenfassung
|
With the inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2003, Monte San Giorgio in southern Ticino received the honour to be internationally recognized as a unique «Fossillagerstätte» This also reflects the appreciation of the scientific work of several generations of professionals and amateurs in paleontology. They have worked on the fossils from Monte San Giorgio since the middle of the 19th century, partly in the Italian vicinity near Besano as well as on Monte San Giorgio near the small village Meride in southern Switzerland. More than JO 000 fossils of various dimensions have been gathered by painstaking manual labour from the hard rocks. Then they were carefully prepared, scientifically studied, and finally published in numerous publications. Some of the best specimens are exposed in public museums. More than 200 different animal and plant species have been found: fossil reptiles or «saurians» (20), fish (80), invertebrate animals (100) and plants (5). The remains of organisms are conserved in a thick sequence of shaly, calcareous and dolomitic sediments from a subtropical marine basin. The occurrence of five successive levels rich in vertebrate fossils from the Middle Triassic, dated by geologists as 230 to 245 millions years old, is world wide unique. The perfect preservation of many articulated skeletons makes the area a nearly inexhaustible treasure chest for paleontology. Only paleontologists may open this time window of evolution and, consequently, get insight in the long history of life on our planet
